The verying loads at verying rpm's is what helps seat the rings.Īllowing the engine to run long enough to come up to temp and cool down again like what is needed to burb the cooling system is fine and won't hurt the motor since it is only for a limited amount of run time. Without this load the rings just slide up and down glazeing the cylinders and themself and can do so enough so that they will never seal. The rings seat as they are forced against the cylinder walls from the pressure on top the piston from the combustion process with the gasses expanding the rings and forcing them out. Never lug engine under 2000 rpm or allow it to rev higher then about 5-5500 rpms.Allow the engine to decellerate under the weight of the car as this helps seal the cylinders also. Put the engine under loads in the mid and higher gears but not enough load to bog the engine. Never stay at a steady speed for long periods. Change it again after 3-500 miles with same non syn. I like to change oil and filter after the first couple test drives if nothing but to clean out the engine from dirt and assm. This goes for all the time not just a fresh motor.Free reving a motor (no load) is not good. What you don't want to do is rev the engine (5 grand or so)or hold throttle wide open without a load. oil can be used with good results but for uncontroled breakin on the street and not a dyno regular oil is safer. For a street engine meaning one that is expected to live a long life compared to a race engine that might only see a few hundred miles. If the engine is assembled correctlly the only break in needed will be to seat the rings to the cylinder walls.
